History of NBU

On 3 May 1990 the Society for New Bulgarian University was founded. Its main idea is to create a non-governmental academic institution, an alternative to the state university. Prof. Bogdan Bogdanov, D.Sc. was elected Chairman of the Society.

On 18 September 1991 the Society for New Bulgarian University was chartered by the Seventh Great National Assembly - NEW BULGARIAN UNIVERSITY. The goal of the new institution is to work for modernization of the higher education in Bulgaria as well as to hold on the traditions. Among its priorities are: development of the interdisciplinary programs, ensuring mobility to both students and professors, education for life, research of the reality and respectively - development of new educational programs, new occupations, and a change into the reality. Throughout the ten years since New Bulgarian University was founded, it has introduced and developed:

·        Education in the programs for specialit’s, bachelor's, master's and doctor's degrees

·        Credit system

·        Wide range of basic education

·        Interdisciplinary programs

·        Distance learning education

·        Continuing education

                        ·        New model of admittance procedure and test: General Education Test

Management

Managerial body of NBU is consisting of: Board of Trustees, Chairman of the Board, Academic Council and Rector. The Conference of NBU is part of the Academic Council and has a supportive role with discussions of important issues and general development of NBU.

University activity is organized according the Strategic Plan of NBU. At present the Strategic Plan for 2000-2005 is in developing status.

Management of NBU is on the basis of University Regulation and all appended ordinances, instructing for university order and educational process within NBU.

Research

Research activity is concentrated in the Departments and Centres of NBU. Major elements of the NBU research policy are development of the research capacity of NBU through projects; development of interdisciplinary research and integrated approach to teaching and research at NBU.

One of the main priorities of NBU research policy is to establish NBU as an international research centre and to integrate it into international networks of universities. Over the last years, NBU has won many international projects financed under EU Fifth Framework Programme, NATO Science Programme, James McDonnell Foundation, Volkswagen Foundation, German Research Fund, Italian National Research Council, Open Society Institute, British Council, etc.

The Board of Trustees of NBU has set up a special Research Fund.

- to be an innovative, student-orientated and interdisciplinary academic institution whose purpose is to attract open-minded men and women and cultivate their ability to think critically, to reason and analyze combined with a broad range of deep interests

- to prepare our students for the challenges of independent life, developing their leadership and entrepreneurship qualities

- to prepare people for life in a democratic and civil society

- to harmonize new technologies and economic globalization with the needs and aspiration of regional communities and qualities and interests of each individual

- to be the place for the development of individuals with deep social concerns.
